capstone reflections

That's not a good enough reason of course, just to show off. If I'd known Landmark students would have reated the way they do, I might not have created the site. But, when I teach at Marlboro, it's great. When I present teaching with webtools, it's wonderful.
from Frank Klucken
why have I missed this??? This is where I pigheadedly started. My web efforts went nowhere with my students. Building a better web make the difference. I got the administrative support but without the students, what a dud!

working on the worksheet for planning for change - several points to emphasize with colleagues.
Tech is not necessary to repeat what we already do. Nothing takes the place of face to face. How does tech provide new opportunities?
individualization, just-in-time support (a notion that is being developed institutionally with the CTL) such as IM messaging the evening before the assignment is due
another important attitude is that the net is not about information (well it is but...for hyperbole sake) but about communication
what does this mean? what are the implications of this communication idea? And it's important to think of communication as transactional - not sending!

In thinking it over further it seems very important to be able to describe the role a web site would play into a course of regular instruction here. What can the technology do to make the face-to-face encounter more effective, more productive. Chris DeDe gets this this in an article I read the other day. The web materials provide "presentation" and "motivation" The idea being is that students assess and become familiar with content through the web but use the class for problem solving projects, inqueries, and discussion pursuits. I want to look into this further and think this will be an important dimension of my capstone, the primary message.

Have taken the survey information and compiled it for analysis. There is much to learn from here.
The responses were both more positive and more negative than I anticipated. I think it speaks to the two things: people don't know much about web work and that my project has not been well defined. The comments are more questions in many cases. These refer to how the tool, the web site, will be used. I think I know the answer to that question but do I really? Even that can be slippery and I should be clear.
So here is what I think it can be like. The web site will be used by students every week to access archived material about the course, to gain current information about the course (only available online) and to post contributions to the weekly asynchronous discussion board. Students will be introduced to the web site in the first week of the course in class with their laptops. They will have their laptops open for each class and can follow powerpoint presentations and conduct web quests during class. Notetaking and class assignment planning can also be emphasized (not sure how to set this up yet- however, from my experience this semester it is clear that I should better emphasize notetaking than I am currently doing).
